sTARTUp Lab hosted health tech startups Demo Day
E-Boat is an accelerator for start-ups with innovative health solutions. The unique programme consisted of six weeks of distance learning followed by a two-week cruise and hackathon on the Baltic Sea (Gdansk-Klaipeda-Riga-Stockholm-Tallinn), where participants further developed, validated and fine-tuned their products for launch in the European market.
A day before coming to Estonia teams had their pitching competition in Stockholm where 3 winning teams were chosen to participate in “The Health Bootcamp Tour 2019”.
On 19th September teams pitched their novel ideas at Demo Day in Tallinn. Around 40 people interested in innovative business ventures in health care had a chance to share experience and network with the teams at the Palo Alto Club in Tallinn. Among others, Kerti Alev, founder of Medikeep told her story of becoming a startup and Piret Hirv from Estonian Health Tech Cluster introduced their activities and support provided.
The event in Tallinn was organised by the University of Tartu sTARTUp Lab. Taavi Tamm, E-Boat project manager and mentor from the University of Tartu joined the Bootcamp from Riga to support the teams on their second half of the trip.
“I had a chance to meet all the teams at the kick-off event in Łódź at the beginning of June and the progress they have made through the summer is impressive. They are all in a rather different stage of development but all of them have made a huge step forward. Some are working on their business model and MVP, the others had already a working prototype and some of them were already selling by the end of the Bootcamp. It’s amazing to see what can be done within 3 months if you stay fully committed and put in a lot of hours.”
At the final feedback round participants brought forward the biggest takeaways such as:
good mentors, being out of comfort zone, learning from each other and sailing experience.
Among 12 teams there are 2 startups from Estonia. One of them (Medaid) is member of the Connected Health Cluster.
Medaid has found that there’s a lot of resources wasted in the primary care sector, which is why they are building a software platform for the primary care physicians to help them to manage their patients more efficiently.
Hemochromatosis is a hereditary condition that causes excess iron levels in the blood. If untreated, it can lead to potentially serious health problems such as liver disease, heart abnormalities, and diabetes. Neuroactive AI is developing an app that will predict the risk of an individual developing this condition, taking into account both genetic and lifestyle factors.

E-Boat Bootcamp 2019 was funded by EIT Health and initiated by the Medical University of Łódź in partnership with the RISE Research Institutes of Sweden and University of Tartu sTARTUp Lab.
